This weekend in the United States, we celebrate Independence Day (July 4th). Millions of Americans commemorate the country’s gaining of independence—its freedom—by gathering with family and friends, enjoying grilled food, and watching fireworks light up the night sky.
Holidays—like Independence Day—can evoke a mix of emotions. While some might celebrate these occasions with joy, others may find them more difficult in their current season.
This might be the first time someone is missing from the table. There may be a new medical diagnosis, and the road ahead looks long and hard. Finances might be tight, and there isn’t enough to go around, let alone to spend on a celebration. You may be suffering from an addiction or in recovery. You may be estranged from your family, or in this stage of life, you might be alone. In these cases, and many more, celebrating is not at the top of the list of things to do. But…
If you are a follower of Jesus, no matter where you are from or what you are facing, you always have a reason to rejoice about your freedom in Christ. When you placed your trust in Him, He set you free from the power of sin and gave you a new life in Him. And that’s worth celebrating every day.
That doesn’t make life easy, but with Him walking with you, life can be easier. His love, coupled with His mercy and grace, can provide the comfort, support, and care that can help you. I encourage you on this Independence Day to reflect on real independence, because He will help you live life to the fullest (John 10:10). If you haven’t met Him yet, you can meet Him today. And if you do, today really will be a monumental Independence Day. Here is living free—Happy Independence Day!
