Comedian John Branyan said, “We didn’t think up laughter; that wasn’t our idea. Laughter was given to us by God, who knew we were going to need it to get through life. He knew we were going to have hardship, struggles, and stuff was going to happen. Laughter is a gift.”
A quick look at the creatures God made can also bring laughter. Whether oddities like a duck-billed platypus or the antics of Prairie Dogs, some things are funny looking and acting. He made mammals that live in the ocean and long-legged birds that can’t fly. God clearly has a sense of humor, and because we’re created in His image, we too, have the joy of laughter.
I point out laughter as a gift from God because I know that all good things come from Him, and he is a giver of good because He is good. I know bad things and bad people exist, and I realize that bad things happen to good and bad people. No, I can’t explain why things happen, but I am not going to blame them on God because I know God is good.
I invite you to think about this. The principle of reciprocity is one of the fundamental laws of social psychology: It says that in many social situations, we pay back what we receive from others. In other words, if someone does you a favor, you’re likely to return it to him or her. This isn’t just fancy manipulation to get your way; it is deeply embedded in humans because we are created in the image of God. This may be good social etiquette, but it really is more than that. Doing good is a way of living, and when we do good, we emulate God.
You may be familiar with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or the idea that a company should play a positive role in the community. CSR began in the late 60s and early 70s, and many companies adopted this as a strategic initiative because it helped with their marketing efforts and boosted their brand reputation. The truth is that “doing good” has existed since the beginning of time. When God created the world, He said that what He created was good, and His intention was for it to be used by humankind for good. This idea flows out of the nature of God because God is good.
At Doing Good at Work, we encourage and equip individuals, businesses, organizations, and non-profit leaders to embrace the fact that “God is Good.” We promote and practice three outward expressions of this principle: Do Good to your employees, Do Good by creating and delivering good products and services, and Do Good in the community where you are planted. It’s simple but powerful.
We encourage you to become a Participant in the Doing Good at Work movement, and we pledge to support and help you DO GOOD. Join the movement today! Learn more: https://doinggoodatwork.com/
