Easter, as a kid, was a wonderful time for me. We always got new “going to church” clothes, dyed and hunted Easter eggs, and went to the Triangle Volunteer Fire Department Country Ham Supper on Saturday and the Winston-Salem Pancake Breakfast on Easter morning before church. For many years, we got up early for the Old Salem Moravian Sunrise Service that happened in God’s Acre Cemetery in Old Salem. I can still hear the brass band playing “Up from the Grave He Arose” as the sun broke the plane of the earth and began to ascend into the sky. It was glorious!
Easter, with all its traditions, can never overshadow the real reason we celebrate Easter. Easter is all about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus, in His death, paid the price for the sins of all people, and in His resurrection, He overcame spiritual death. Through His death and resurrection, people can be reconciled with God and receive eternal life. All the excitement of Easter wrapped in joy, hope, and love burst forth when the stone that sealed the tomb was rolled away. I can still hear gatherings of Christians around the world saying in unison – “He is risen. Yes, He is risen indeed! This affirmation brings great hope to all who believe.
As you reflect on these thoughts, remember: The last eight days of Jesus’ life are the most important days in human history. They are the centerpiece of God’s work, and Jesus’ Resurrection is the ultimate victory over sin and death. We are not talking about man-made religions but God-made relationships.
Now, back to those new Easter clothes—when I believed in Jesus’ finished work by faith, I got new clothes for Easter. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things become new.” Now that is real Easter Encouragement!
