Swimming
C

I don’t know much about swimming, but I am learning. Why? One of my granddaughters is a young competitive swimmer, and I want to encourage and support her as she pursues the opportunity to do her best.

Here is one thing I have learned about swimming in a short time: A race is won or lost in at least one of three specific places: Off the blocks, in the turn, and at the finish. All three areas require excellence in execution, and failure to do so limits the chances of doing your best.

Off the blocks (start) requires readiness, focus, and commitment. In the turn (transition), awareness, timing, and execution are required. At the wall, determination, sacrifice, and desire are required. When a swimmer executes at all three points, good things happen. Olympic swimming superstar Katie Ledecky is a great example.

Even if you’re not a swimmer, the principles of readiness, focus, commitment, awareness, timing, execution, determination, sacrifice, and desire are universally applicable. They hold true in life, work, and play, guiding us to do our best in every endeavor.

When you start a new venture (of any kind), you must be ready, focused on the task, and committed to jumping in when the time is right. In life, there will always be transitions and changes. You must be aware of where you are, the timing needs to be correct, and you must execute the transitional plan. Last, life is a series of seasons, and each season has a finish line. As the finish line approaches, it’s not time to slow down, but a time to accelerate. The determination to finish strong and the desire to do your best drives can propel you to the highest level of achievement. All the prep, training, practice, and sacrifice come to fruition, and whatever the result, you find fulfillment and joy because you have given your all and done your best.
